Chellappa Sundar: “Make do with less”

This week, The Switch participated in the 2011 Delhi Sustainable Development Summit. A number of leading minds gathered here this week, including heads of state, economists, CEOs and other private sector representatives, to discuss sustainable development and economy from local perspective. The notion of a Green Economy has gained momentum in recent years due to increased understanding of the links between the environment and the economy, and the emergence of climate change as a major global priority. If our future is to be in any way assured, our economies need to achieve human well-being without destroying the environment on which that well-being depends.

The Switch mission is to harness untapped New Energy resources and our solutions contribute to the combat against climate change. Globally, India has taken prominence in harvesting wind power. The country has 18,000 MW of installed renewable energy capacity, and some 13,000 MW of that figure come from wind energy alone. The number is expected to grow. At The Switch, we have a lot to give for the harvesting of renewable energy in India. We have a global reference of 5000 MW installations in wind energy and this represents 40 percent of India’s installed wind capacity. By 2022, the Indian government plans to have 25,000 MW of wind power and 20,000 MW of solar power respectively. Additionally, local states are also keen to invest in the renewable. For example, the state of Gujarat in the Western part of India, plans to have 900 MW of installed solar power in the next two years, part of which can be materialized with the help of The Switch solutions.

Like Honorable Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said in his inauguration speech, individuals particularly in the developed world need to make life-style changes and “make do with less”. As consumers, we can all contribute to energy saving by making our own eco pledges. As a company, we at The Switch are also doing our share in furthering Green Economy with our wind and solar power solutions that “make do with less” and minimize carbon footprint globally.
