Since the start of the company, high-speed applications have always played a special role. The Switch solid rotor technology is simple and solid. It eliminates the need for a gearbox and takes advantage of adjustable full-speed control for all high-speed or turbo applications.
To further develop high-power electrical drive trains, Yaskawa Environmental Energy / The Switch recently began a research project with Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT). The main focus of the research activities lies on high-power, high-speed applications.
The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Yaskawa’s R&D and LUT’s research teams. Yaskawa Environmental Energy will contribute to the project by providing comprehensive information, expert input and testing facilities.
“We have had a long history of research cooperation with LUT. This latest collaboration with their research team is a perfect opportunity for us to further advance our offering of high-power electrical drive trains. It enables us to work toward our ultimate goal of lowering the cost of energy and operations for our customers,” Panu Kurronen, VP Technology at Yaskawa Environmental Energy.
The project was started in fall 2020 and should be finalized by spring 2022.
The benefits of The Switch solid rotor technology include high availability, high reliability, full speed control and a compact, lightweight design. In fact, over 1,000 solid rotor motors have been produced at the Lappeenranta factory to date with zero rotor defects!
