The Switch enters marine business

Permanent magnet (PM) technology has some clear benefits also for marine applications. Since fuel prices have gone up by 30% in only 2 years and freight rates have remained at about the same level for the past 10 years, energy savings has become hot topic in shipbuilding.

By using PM technology just in shaft generator systems alone, we can save 15%, which equals EUR 400,000–800,000 per year. PM technology is not only energy efficient, but it enables machines to be really compact in size.

The Switch way of working in marine means offering flexibility and deep collaboration to OEMs. We also offer our popular full-power converter (FPC) series for these applications.

Mika Koli joined The Switch to develop the marine business. He brings seven years of work experience in this industry. In this blog, you can follow his thoughts
and ideas of how and where to implement permanent magnet machines.

“PM machines and FPCs have great benefits, but they are not widely used in marine applications yet. I am excited to start that technology revolution in this segment like The Switch has done in wind power,” Mika says.

“My personal marine history started when I was much younger. When others were driving motorcycles, I had my sailing boat. I have always loved the sea,” he says enthusiastically.
